How To Choose A Logo Style For Your Brand

Read This Before You Pay For A Logo.

A solid logo is absolutely crucial for your brand identity. A well designed logo can increase brand recognition up to 80%, make a great first impression, and instill trust in your potential buyers.

However, not every logo is created equally. I wanted to make this post to go over the 7 different (popular) types of logos, and what you may want to consider depending on your brand.

1. Wordmark (Logotype)

This is a logo consisting of the brand name in a unique, or eye catching typeface. This isn’t just a font that is typed out (Pro Tip: you can’t trademark a font. Your logotype has to be unique.) A custom made Logotype is a great way to stand out for decades to come.

Brands famous for this are Coca Cola, and Google. If your brand name is short, and distinct, consider a Wordmark logo.

2. Lettermark (Monogram)

A logo made up of abbreviations or initials. If your brand name is particularly long, a Lettermark logo might be what you need to make it more clear who you are. After all, it’d be very difficult to fit “International Business Machine” into a favicon image.
Examples of this are IBM, HBO, and CNN.

3. Brand Symbol

A logo that contains no text, just a symbol or icon.
A bold option for distinct brands. If you want a strong and easily recognizable visual identity, consider the Brand Symbol as your logo. But be warned, this is not for the faint of heart.
Brands that do this well are Nike, and Apple.

4. Combination Mark

A symbol and a wordmark combined. A powerful combo that uses option 1 and 3 to make a memorable icon, with the name recognition too. Brands that use this well are Adidas and Burger King. If you have a strong name, and want the visual recognition of a symbol, consider this option.

5. Emblem Logo

Often text based logos, these sit inside of a badge or symbol. Harley Davidson and Starbucks both use an Emblem logo. If you’re a more traditional brand, or even just want to feel a bit more prestigious like a college, and emblem logo is a great and timeless choice.

6. Abstract Logo

As it name implies, an abstract logo is a custom shape, often more artistic in nature. Pepsi uses an abstract logo to great success. (even though Coke is the superior soda) If your brand is more artistic and modern, an abstract logo is a wonderful option.

7. Mascot Logo

The mascot logo is one that uses an illustrated/cartoon figure to represent a brand. They can be helpful in marketing as well, as the mascot acts as a mouthpiece for the brand. You’ll find mascot logos for KFC, Pringles, and a lot of Kellogg products such as Frosted Flakes. If your brand is family friendly, aimed at children, or fun and goofy, consider a mascot logo.
